The Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) has been awarded an Emergency Supplemental Historical Preservation Fund (ESHPF) grant, administered by the National Park Service, to conduct archaeological surveys of state owned and managed shorelines and adjacent submerged bottomlands that were impacted by Hurricanes Florence and Michael in 2018. As part of this work, the North Carolina Office of State Archaeology (OSA) is seeking professional archaeological vendors to identify, document, and assess the condition of archaeological sites near the shoreline and in the littoral zone of survey areas selected for their environmental vulnerability and likelihood to contain significant archaeological sites. In addition, remote sensing will be conducted in adjacent waterways to identify potential submerged cultural resources. This coordinated effort to investigate associated terrestrial and submerged resources will allow for the holistic assessment of material culture created by North Carolina’s historical coastal communities.

The information created by the Shorescape Survey will be used to develop management strategies for archaeological sites in need of monitoring, stabilization, mitigation, and resiliency as well as to create historic contexts and nominations for the National Register of Historic Places
